Dolomite is My Name

Eddie Murphy

Netflix

This was entertaining.  A man who wants to be a singing sensation but no one will play his records becomes a stand up sensation  this is a man who never lets no deter him.

 Stan and Ollie 2018

starring Steve Coogan and John C Reilly

 available on Prime

Steve Coogan plays  Stan and John C Reilly plays  Ollie, both were terrific. The movie took place towards the end of their career they are trying to revive their career with a tour of the UK and Ireland.

 Showboat 1936

starring Irene Dunne, Alan Jones,  Helen Morgan, Hattie McDaniel and Paul Robeson

available for rent on Prime video, but it'll probably be played on TCM sometime soon.

in many ways this version of Showboat is better than the 1951 version, for one thing you get Paul Robeson singing Old Man River, my favorite line from this song is I'm tired of living but scared of dying.
Of course there is a lot of racism but there was a lot of racism in the era that it took place and in the Arrow when it  was filmed,  whether it was a reflection of the time it took place or just the racism of the 1930s I'll leave that for Scholars to figure out. There was a number a musical number in blackface which of course horrified me but was also indicative at the time the really degrading part was having Joe play by Paul Robeson be lazy, and having Hattie McDaniel open her eyes wide and slide them back and forth it's hard to explain but you know it when you see it.
I do recommend both versions of the movie as one of the key plot points is a woman who is passing as white  married to a white man witch in the south and probably at many other states was illegal.
Sometimes I have a hard time believing the ending
,however as the song says It's Only Make Believe.

Blinded by the Light 2019

Starring Viveik Kaira

Available currently on HBO and Hulu

I guess the big question on this movie is wood a non Bruce Springsteen fan like it I can't answer that I'm a Springsteen fan I thought it was terrific there's a lot of good music of course and  and the plot we've seen before with a young person breaking out against his  parents and  culture.
However it did show the joy and exuberance you feel when you discover an artist that you really really love  and I guess that's the part I liked best.
Though I do think the writers of this movie gave way more meaning to the song Blinded By the Light that I ever would have,  it reminded me of when you're in high school and you're in your poetry section of English and they're telling you what all these poems me and you're like oh and how did they get that out of that,  seriously how did they know that was the author's intention okay I digressed.

Red Headed Woman 1932

starring Jean Harlow

the main character "Red" in this movie it's not likeable she's a woman who sees what she wants and does everything she possibly can to get it.
Why should you watch this movie?  That's a good point. I watched it because I don't think I had ever seen a Jean Harlow movie if you're film buff at all you have to see a Jean Harlow movie.  I'm sure there are much better Harlow movies, howeve this movie gets mentioned aR lot when people talk of Jean Harlow or old movies.
